Success Story: Greater Wichita Partnership

magnifying glass icon  The Situation:

In the mid-2010s, Wichita was anchored by legacy industries such as aerospace, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing, but the region faced a pivotal moment. Recognizing that incremental change was not enough, leaders formed the Greater Wichita Partnership (GWP) to mobilize a bold, collaborative vision for the future. GWP structured its approach around three core pillars: Jobs, Talent, and Quality of Place. These pillars served as catalysts to expand and retain existing businesses, launch targeted attraction efforts in sectors like aerospace and biotech, and build a dynamic workforce. Simultaneously, GWP focused on transforming Wichita's downtown into a premier destination for employers, residents, and visitors.

Based on comprehensive findings, GWP launched a new campaign with a baseline goal of $4.2 million, which represented a 40% increase from their existing support. The campaign ultimately moved to  a stretch goal of $4.95 million.

Like many mid-sized metros, Wichita was grappling with several distinct challenges: it needed to retain top talent, diversify its overall economy, and revitalize its downtown core.

In 2024, GWP engaged RDG to assess stakeholder views on the organization's performance, strategic priorities, and fundraising capacity. To maximize the upcoming campaign, RDG worked directly with GWP's Investor Relations team to refine their engagement options. RDG then actively led the first seven months of the campaign before transitioning into an advisory and support role as needed.

  • The initial feasibility study revealed strong confidence in GWP, unanimous support for its strategy, and clear market readiness for a significant campaign.
  • Refining engagement options resulted in enhanced participation and collaboration opportunities for both new and existing investors.
  • During the first seven months of the campaign, RDG successfully secured expanded commitments from current investors while bringing in a dozen new ones.
  • The campaign successfully surpassed its $4.2 million baseline goal, and momentum is continuing.
  • The newly secured resources will actively expand GWP's capacity to diversify the regional economy, strengthen the talent pipeline, and further enhance downtown distinction.
